Going Around Zimbabwe – My Favourite Trip of the Year!

After another year of traversing the vibrant tapestry of Southern Africa, I stood awestruck before the undeniable magic of Zimbabwe—my most captivating journey yet. From Botswana’s sun-kissed savannas to Namibia’s windswept dunes, I had chased unforgettable experiences across this magnificent continent. Yet, Zimbabwe, with its untamed wilderness, ancient whispers, and infectious smiles, wove itself into the very fabric of my soul.

Last year, I explored Zimbabwe’s untouched wilderness in Mana Pools, cruised Lake Kariba on a houseboat, conquered fear on the Mutarazi Skywalk, and saw ancient ruins in Great Zimbabwe. Matobo Hills surprised me with a zonkey encounter, and Hwange National Park treated me to herds of elephants and lion roars at sunset.

Mana Pools – Untouched Wilderness:

My odyssey began in the heart of Mana Pools National Park, where the Zambezi River carves its path through pristine wilderness. Untamed beauty unfolded before me—elephants ambled across flood plains, hippos basked in the sun, and crocodiles guarded tranquil pools. Every sunrise brought a new symphony of life, every bend in the river revealing untouched landscapes that whispered tales of a timeless Africa.

Home Sweet Houseboat: Cruising Kariba in Style:

Leaving the land behind, I embarked on a unique adventure—a serene houseboat journey across the vast expanse of Lake Kariba. I spent mornings sipping coffee on the deck, watching the sunrise paint the water in fiery hues, and evenings under starry skies with the gentle gurgle of the lake accompanying my laughter. It wasn’t just a journey; it was a floating haven of relaxation and shared stories.

Conquering Mutarazi: A Dance with Heights:

In Nyanga, the call of adventure led me to the Mutarazi Skywalk. Stepping onto the bridge suspended 400 meters above the gorge, my heart pounded with a mix of exhilaration and trepidation. Yet, as I gazed upon the panoramic vistas of lush valleys and cascading waterfalls, a sense of awe washed over me. In that moment, I danced with the clouds, conquering not just the physical height but also the fear that held me back.

Bridal Veil Falls – A Hidden Pearl Worth the Trek:

Deep in the Chimanimani Mountains, a hidden gem awaited—the Bridal Veil Falls. Reaching this cascading wonder involved a challenging trek, but the reward was unparalleled. The cool mist of the falls kissed my face as I stood mesmerized by its ethereal beauty, a cascading veil of water painting the lush green canvas of the mountains. It was a testament to the fact that sometimes, the most breathtaking treasures lie off the beaten path, waiting to be discovered by those who dare to seek them.

Echoes of a Great Kingdom: Great Zimbabwe:

Every time I visit, stepping into the ancient ruins of Great Zimbabwe feels like stepping through a portal to a glorious past. The imposing stone walls whisper stories of a powerful civilization, their intricate carvings telling tales of kings and rituals. Standing amidst these relics, I felt the weight of history, humbled by the legacy of a people who built kingdoms on the foundations of ingenuity and connection with the land.

A Zonkey Encounter: Matobo Hills’ Surprising Resident:

In the mystical Matobo Hills, a chance encounter added a touch of whimsical wonder to my journey. I met a Zonkey, a unique creature born from the unlikely union of a zebra and a donkey. Its striped legs and donkey-grey body were a reminder of the unexpected beauty that lies in the diversity of life, and the importance of embracing the unconventional.

Last year, I embarked on dozens of incredible trips, each one special and leaving its mark on my heart. However, this journey through Zimbabwe stands out as a true masterpiece. It wasn’t just about ticking destinations off a list; it was about immersing myself in the diverse beauty of a nation, sharing laughter and wonder with a remarkable group of travelers, and returning home with memories etched in my soul.

If you’re seeking an adventure that will challenge your limits, open your eyes to new horizons, and leave you breathless with wonder, then join me on my next exploration of Zimbabwe—a land where magic whispers on the wind and every corner holds a story waiting to be told.
